Japanese Coturnix
The Japanese quail, also known as Coturnix japonica, it can be raised for both egg and meat production.
The male Japanese quail tend to be smaller in size than the females. Domesticated birds generally weigh between 100 and 120 grams when fully grown.
These small birds are ideal bottom feeders for avairies, or indoor pets, as they have a short life span of approx 2 - 2.5 years.
Japanese quail mature in about 6 weeks and are usually in full egg production by 50 days of age.
With proper care, hens should lay 200 eggs in their first year of lay.
Their eggs are generally mottled with a background color ranging from white to blue to pale brown.
Eggs can weigh from 8 to 13 grams depending, and the older females tend to lay much larger sized eggs as opposed to younger quails.
